ILKLEY Summer Festival has welcomed £7,000 of funding from Bradford Council, as cutbacks take their toll on other local authority spending.

Festival managing director Anne Hawkesworth, who is also a ward councillor, said it was a ‘pleasant surprise’ that a request to the council’s visitor attraction budget has been successful.

She said: “It is a one-off pot which had some underspend from last year. The authority must have been convinced that we attracted visitors to the town.”

The programme presented to Bradford Council for this year includes a nostalgic 40s to the 00s event, as well as Yorkshire Day celebrations, and a three-day jazz festival.

Cllr Hawkesworth added: “The festival is in negotiations at the present time with Craven Old Wheels and other car clubs, plus Ilkley Rugby Club. I hope to give more news on that front shortly.
