A newly-appointed Ilkley Parish Council project manager hopes to put up a big screen for spectators as part of plans for the 2014 Tour de France visit.

Councillor Bryan Websdale was this week appointed the Council’s official project manager looking into preparations for the Grand Depart next summer.

Councillor Websdale will be meeting with local organisations and tourism body Welcome to Yorkshire next week to discuss arrangements and aspirations for the major sporting event passing through Ilkley.

He is also seeking funding and permission to screen the action from the race on a big screen at a location yet to be confirmed.

The screen could go on The Grove or at the Riverside Gardens if it is agreed.

And among other preparations mooted is the provision of a temporary campsite for the visitors expected to flock into Wharfedale.

Coun Websdale says hotels in the area are already full, and the area’s tourism partnership is working with accommodation providers on ways of maximising beds available. He called on members of the community to contribute with their ideas.
