Scarr Cottage, Briggate, Nessfield, Ilkley, £685,000
Dacre, Son & Hartley, Ilkley (01943) 600655

John Wesley, who is largely credited, along with his brother Charles Wesley, as founding the Methodist movement must have frequently passed through the village of Ilkley on his travels through Wharfedale to preach in nearby Otley in the mid to late-18th century, when part of Scarr Cottage was first built.

Over the years the cottage has evolved into a very characterful detached home, which fortunately still has many interesting features such as beamed ceilings, stone-flagged floors and mullion windows.

This is a comfortable home laid out over two floors, with an entrance porch, reception hall, cloakroom, utility room, two splendid reception rooms, pantry, wine store and a kitchen complete with Aga on the ground floor.

At first floor level, there is a master en-suite bedroom, two further bedrooms and a study/fourth bedroom, accessed off bedroom three, and a family bathroom.

Outside, the attractively-landscaped grounds, which lie on the southern side of the cottage, are laid out over several levels, offering a lovely setting for the cottage itself, and include a fish pond and waterfall feature and a number of vantage points, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the magnificent views. There is also a vegetable garden with soft fruits and a greenhouse, plus a double garage with remote-control door and parking in front, and several outbuildings.

The reception rooms have character to spare with beamed ceilings and stone-flagged floor, with an open fireplace in an old stone surround in the sitting room and stone mullion windows in the dining room.

Fitted with an attractive range of pine-fronted units with granite work surfaces, the kitchen boasts a red Aga cooker, ceramic tiled floor, beaming ceiling, door to the sun terrace and another door to a very useful pantry with wine cellar.

An interesting old oak staircase from the reception hall leads to the first-floor landing off which is the master bedroom – with lovely views – and an en-suite shower room with wainscot panelling on two walls, extensive range of fitted wardrobes, dressing table, and multi-pained window.

There are two further bedrooms – one with exposed beams and rafter plus a range of fitted cupboards, while a door from bedroom three leads to a study, which also has exposed ceiling beams.

Finally, the part-tiled house bathroom has a white suite including a panelled bath with shower attachment, pedestal wash basin and WC.

Set in the heart of the village of Nessfield, this is a charming home just three miles from Ilkley, with its varied amenities.
