South View Juniors was the name of a Yeadon school until recent times – and the name will live on as some of its former pupils bid for stardom in a band.

The Stanhope twins Jon (rhythm guitar) and Ben (lead vocals) have expanded their band and they and old schoolfriend Andy Young (lead guitar and vocals) have been joined by fellow locals, bassist Adam Prince and drummer Peter Love.

They have a slot at The Beaver Works in Hunslet, Leeds, this Saturday night and will then play the Cardigan Arms in Kirkstall the following Friday.

The band write their own music and many local places feature including a Yeadon newsagents – George’s on Harrogate Road – a popular haunt for the boys to buy sweets on the way home from school which is mentioned in one of the songs, Got You.

Formed almost three years ago, South View Juniors took their name from the former primary school on Rufford Avenue.

The original school featured so warmly in the memories of band members that they decided to use the name.

Jon Stanhope, 29, said: "We are all Yeadon lads and have some very vivid memories of our childhood. “ The band describes itself as ‘kind of Brit pop’ and they have been working hard playing at various venues throughout Leeds.

They are hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Yorkshire band the Arctic Monkeys by promoting themselves via the internet on the social networking site MySpace.

Jon, a PE teacher, said: “Our main influences are British bands like the Beatles and the Jam. We are really starting to push ourselves now and want to give it our best shot and take it as far as we can.

“Our MySpace site has had thousands of hits, it’s the best way to reach a big audience and we are feeling very optimistic.”
