THE tense and offbeat Italian film Dogman is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, November 3 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).

In a run-down coastal town, the timid Marcello runs a dog-grooming salon. Despite the break-up of his marriage he seems quite happy, well-liked by the community, with a circle of friends and an adored daughter. But in order to give her the things she desires he dabbles in a more unsavoury business, which brings him to the attention of the feared local bully, Simone. The resulting abusive “friendship” forces Marcello into a decision that will change his life.

The work of director Matteo Garrone, whose drama of Neapolitan criminals, Gomorrah, was an international hit in 2008, Dogman landed Marcello Fonte the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival. The film shows an aspect of Italy rarely seen on British screens, and its extraordinary final shot will stay in the viewer’s memory for a long time.
