THE savage avenger-thriller You Were Never Really Here is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, April 28 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).

Joaquin Phoenix, who won Best Actor at Cannes for his performance, plays Joe, a professional retriever of abducted and abused children who specialises in inflicting his own punishments on those responsible.

Joe is himself a deeply disturbed ex-marine, suffering from memories of his military service and abusive childhood.

After accepting a new assignment from a senator whose daughter has run away he discovers a ring of abusers involving both politicians and police.

Scottish writer-director Lynne Ramsay, who also won at Cannes for her screenplay, made her name in Britain with very different films like Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar.

This is her second USA-set movie, following We Need To Talk About Kevin six years earlier.

This film will be screened with hard-of-hearing subtitles.

Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) and seats can be reserved by calling Dave Howell on (01943) 430097.
