TWO Otley choirs will be joining forces to perform for a good cause next month.

Otley Courthouse Choir and Otley Singers are teaming up under the banner of Voices Together in support of Singing for the Brain.

Singing for the Brain is a fun-focused, relaxed singing session which is held at the Courthouse regularly for people with dementia and their carers.

The project was set up to enable people with memory loss to express themselves and socialise in a supportive environment.

Voices Together will perform at the Courthouse on Friday, May 3 to raise money for the scheme.

Otley Courthouse Choir is a community choral group whose repertoire includes songs from the varied folk traditions across the world.

Otley Singers, meanwhile, are another local community choir which brings together people who love to sing and has a wide repertoire of songs, including pop.

A Courthouse spokeswoman said: “The combined talents of the two local choirs will be bolstered by another - the Sheeptown Songsters from Skipton.

“There might even be some mystery guests popping up, though they don’t know about it yet!

“Come along to be entertained by some great singing and fabulous harmonies.”

The performance begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost £7. Places can be booked by visiting www.otleycourthouse.org.uk, calling (01943) 467466 or popping into the Courthouse, on Courthouse Street.

Singing for the Brain meets at the arts venue from 2pm to 4pm on the second and fourth Monday of most months. The first week is free with subsequent sessions costing £1.50, which includes tea and biscuits.

Folk music fans, meanwhile, can look forward to seeing some award-winning songwriters performing at the Courthouse on Saturday, April 27.

Gilmore and Roberts have been nominated three times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and are known for their trademark harmonies and exemplary musicianship.

Katriona Gilmore (fiddle, mandolin) and Jamie Roberts (guitar) met while studying at Leeds College of Music and released their debut album in 2008.

Since then, the duo have toured extensively, including with folk rock legends Fairport Convention, and won countless accolades.

Their Otley show starts at 8pm and will see them performing tracks from their new album, A Problem of Our Kind. Tickets cost £12.
