THE Romanian drama Graduation is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, March 31 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
Romeo is a doctor, known for his integrity, living in a small town in Transylvania. When his daughter Eliza is assaulted the day before she is to sit an entrance exam to study in the UK, Romeo is worried that her exam performance will be affected, jeopardising her future. As he desperately tries to find a way of redressing the balance, Romeo discovers that solutions exist, but are incompatible with the principles by which he has always lived and which he has passed on to his daughter.
Director Cristian Mungiu’s film is a riveting exploration of the extent to which it is possible to live in a thoroughly corrupt society without being tainted oneself, and won him the Best Director award at Cannes following his earlier Palme D’Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but are asked to phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve a seat.
