THE first novel from a writer from Menston has been published on Amazon and Kindle, the online book platform.

Annie Green wrote A Game of Ruff and Honours after retiring as a teacher at Crossflatts Primary School.

A Game of Ruff and Honours, aimed at young adults, tells the story of teenager Alison who discovers the hidden cellars below the Greenwich Observatory and is soon finding out for herself that time is not what it seems and, following a series of tantalising clues, is forced to use all her skills and ingenuity if she is to prevent somebody or something changing the past - and the future.

The story features Yorkshireman, Guy Fawkes, a lead conspirator in the Gun Powder Plot alongside other real-life, contemporary historical characters such as Lord Monteagle.

Annie said: “I’ve always enjoyed writing as a journalist and teaching writing in the classroom and it was a natural progression to writing this book, which, I suppose reflects my deep passion and interest in the history of London – my favourite city - and the natural curiosity of young woman like Alison, my heroine.

“In many ways I was writing the book for myself, but it was also an homage to authors like Rosemary Sutcliffe and other historical writers who opened up the past to me as a child.”

A Game of Ruff and Honours moves between modern day London and a dark Jacobean city, where Alison uncovers a world of deadly secrets and deep plans which must come to a terrible fruition. All this and the day-to-day domestics of a seventeenth century house, lords and ladies, an enigmatic astronomer, a mysterious machine and shadowy figures passing through time make a gripping read.

Recent reviews have included: “The accuracy of the historical detail is impressive but never slows down the pace as Alison tries to solve a series of mysteries and challenges. I’d recommend this for young history fans, or anyone who loves Rosemary Sutcliff’s historical novels.”

Another said: “A thoroughly enjoyable romp through Jacobean London, which introduced me to some fascinating details about that time. Looking forward to Book Two.”
