THE BRAZILIAN drama Aquarius is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, March 3 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
Clara, a 65 year-old widow, is the last resident of the Aquarius, an apartment building in an upper-class area of Recife, the large city on the most easterly part of Brazil’s coast.
The other residents all accepted offers from developers to move out but Clara insists that she will stay until she dies.
The ensuing ‘cold war’ with the developers triggers in her a process of reflecting deeply on both her future and her past life.
Clara is played superbly by the great Brazilian star Sonia Braga, best known here for Kiss Of The Spider Woman (1985). The film caused an uproar in its home country because of its political connotations, and the far-right government of Jair Bolsonaro refused to allow it to be nominated as Brazil’s entry for the Oscars.
The audience should be aware of the film’s length (146 min) and 18 certificate.
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but are asked to call Dave Howell on (01943) 430097 to reserve a seat.
