GARY Oldman’s Oscar-winning performance as Winston Churchill is the core of Darkest Hour, Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday January 20 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
It is 1940, Britain is at war and Churchill has just replaced Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister, but Nazi Germany is not the only threat he faces. Politicians in his own party are agitating for a deal with the Nazis and trying to undermine his position. The true mood of the nation is something he needs to discover.
Oldman also won a BAFTA for his performance and receives fine support from Kristen Scott-Thomas as his wife, Clementine, ans Ben Mendelsohn as King George VI. Directed by Joe Wright (Pride And Prejudice, Atonement) the film also won an Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling !
Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but are asked to phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve a seat.
