Day to day life on one of Otley’s main thoroughfares was captured when this photograph was taken. Although undated the picture of Boroughgate appears to be at least a century old. The building in the centre is the Black Horse Hotel. The image is from the archives of Aireborough Historical Society.
The word Otley derives from the Saxon name Otho or Otto and the old English ‘leah’ which means a wooded clearing.
