FROZEN in time these images from a by-gone era give fascinating glimpses of life on Yeadon High Street in the early years of the 20th century.
Ranging from 1900 to 1923 the pictures show tradesmen and shoppers posing for the camera or going about their business.
While some of the buildings might look familiar everything else about the high street looks very different in these photographs from the Aireborough Historical Society website.
The most recent (top left) shows a woman standing in the doorway of Shuttleworth’s butchers on Yeadon High Street in 1923.
A further image of a butcher’s shop, with carcases on display outside, was taken in 1910 and was donated to AHS by Irene Ellis nee Gooder. Her uncle Walter Gooder is on the left, granddad Harry Gooder stands in the shop doorway. Great granddad Robert Ellis is on the right, the boy is Harry Clarkson Gooder.
Two policemen watch the cameraman in the image (top right) which was captured in 2009, and which looks across from the top of the Steep to the High Street with Ivegate on the right.The view of Lister’s grocers was taken in 1915 and was donated by Paul Weston. The picture of horses and carts was taken in 1909.
