THE NATION celebrated at the start of June in 1953 with the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.

The occasion, on June 2, was marked up and down the land with gatherings and street parties - and Yeadon and Guiseley were no exceptions, as these photographs from the archives of Aireborough Historical Society show.

In a picture donated by Kelvin Grace ( top right) smiling residents from the Park Road estate were pictured on the steps in front of Yeadon Town Hall.

St John’s Church in Yeadon was one of the many which held a party to celebrate (bottom left). This image was donated by Donald and Anne Exley

Youngsters at Yeadon’s South View School were also photographed enjoying the celebrations (middle right). The picture was donated by John Arundel.

Residents of Masefield Street and Bacon Street in Guiseley left their own record in this picture (bottom right) donated by George Newton.

The Guiseley photograph was taken in front of MAP (Ministry of Aircraft Production) homes which were built for people coming into the area to work at the AVRO aircraft factory during the Second World War.

The picture of Queen Elizabeth II on the day of the coronation is from PA Wire.
