THE HISTORY of Leeds Bradford Airport comes under the spotlight in a newly-published book.

Yeadon Above and Beyond traces the airport’s growth from its humble beginnings to its place in international travel today.

Aviation historian Ken Cothliff has produced the book to expand his previous history of the airport Yeadon Above the Rest.

Extensively re-written with more words and more photographs, the book includes information about the airport’s pre World War Two history, as well as the story of the Avro Shadow factory which produced thousands of aircraft for the war effort.

Yeadon Airport was opened on a wet and gloomy day in October 1931. The man appointed to manage it was Captain HV “Harry” Worrall, a First World War naval fighter pilot – who was to have considerable influence on the airfield over the next 20 years. It went on to become a hugely successful airport and is now used by millions of people each year.

Yeadon Above and Beyond is published in paperback and costs £19.99 plus postage of £4 for UK mail order. It is on sale at the Grove Bookshop, Ilkley, Mounseys Stationers in Otley, and Yeadon Post Office.

It can also be ordered from Mr Cothliff at Cherrystone, 114 Harrogate Road, Yeadon, Leeds LS19 6AH. Cheques should be made payable to K B Cothliff. The author can also be contacted at kencothliff@hotmail.co.uk.
