POOL’S Josh Edmondson will ride in the first Tour de Yorkshire which starts in Bridlington tomorrow.

He has been named as a guest rider in the Great Britain team that will ride in the three-day event.

The young squad is made up predominantly from British Cycling’s Olympic Academy Programme and includes Yorkshire riders Gabriel Cullaigh and Oliver Wood.

Team manager Keith Lambert said: “The Tour de Yorkshire represents a significant development opportunity for the under-23 academy riders and one which I know they’re all looking forward to.

“For them to take part in a Tour de France legacy race against some of the world’s best riders is a real exciting prospect and I’m hoping they will be able to learn from the British professionals such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Ben Swift and Steve Cummings whilst in the peloton.”

For Edmondson it is an opportunity to ride on home ground. Sunday’s third stage will see the riders sweep through the area as they tackle the Cow & Calf at Ilkley and Otley Chevin.

It promises to be a tough day for all the riders and the organisers are hoping there will be large crowds out to greet the riders.

That optimism would seem well placed after the record crowds that cheered the riders in last year’s Tour de France.

The presence of the likes of Wiggins and top German sprinter Marcel Kittel, winner of four stages in last year’s Tour de France, adds to the glamour of the new event.

It’s not just Sunday afternoon’s spectacle that is generating excitement. There is a women’s Tour de Yorkshire circuit race in York on Saturday, with strong representation from local riders in the event.

And there is an amateur sportive covering the Tour de Yorkshire route before Sunday’s Tour de Yorkshire stage.

Otley is a hotbed for cycling and the Chevin is expected to be packed with supporters cheering on both the sportive riders and the top professional cyclists.
