Hunslet Club 1 Pool 3

POOL kept alive their slim hopes of maintaining West Yorkshire League Premier Division status with this well-deserved victory at Hunslet Club on Saturday

The younger players shone in this vital game, with the goals coming from Josh Wagstaff, Jamie Algar, and Ryan Firth.

Pool know exactly what they need to do if they are to avoid the drop, starting with a crunch match on Saturday when they entertain Huddersfield Amateur. They currently sit six points off safety.

There was less cheer for Pool's reserve team, who were bundled out of the West Yorkshire League Trophy in the first round by Kirk Deighton Reserves.

It was a scrappy affair, with a poor pitch not helping. It always looked like one goal would sort this as chances were few and far between, and this proved to be the case.

Despite this, Pool almost took the lead early on, Matthew Doran tried his luck from long range and his effort cleared the opposition keeper before striking the crossbar and rebounding back into the grateful stopper's arms.

Pool survived a late first-half scare though, with Kirk Deighton also striking the crossbar.

The match winning period came midway through the second half when Deighton laid siege to the Pool goal for a two minute spell.

The defence could not clear their lines and this culminated in a close-range shot finding the net to break the deadlock. Deighton took the tie with a 1-0 victory.

It proved to be another miserable afternoon in a difficult season for Pool's "A" team in the Harrogate and District League Division One.

They suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Bardsey Reserves, losing 8-1. Adam Dean scored their consolation goal but it did little to alter the outcome of the match.
