CUPS are proving a welcome distraction from relegation battles for some West Yorkshire League teams.

Take Hartshead, for example, who won the Heavy Woollen & District FA's Wheatley Cup final in midweek 5-1 against Morley Town at Liversedge FC.

Braces from Liam Wood and Andrew Wood were added to by Ben Smith, and then it was back to the fight against demotion from the Premier Division on Saturday, when next-to-bottom Hartshead went down 1-0 at home to second-placed Beeston St Anthony's.

Pool, who are bottom, also have some silverware after beating Otley Town 3-1 on Sunday in the Wharfedale & District FA Saturday Challenge Cup final at AFC Guiseley.

Pool got off to the perfect start when Josh Waite put Tom Fleming through on the right, and his perfect low cross found Robert Cross, who made no mistake.

With regular keeper Andy Doey sidelined, Christopher Brodie came in at short notice and did a fine job, but his handling error let in Town for an equaliser.

Town had the edge for the rest of the half, being denied when Waite headed off the line.

Pool stepped up a gear for the second half, however.

Fleming was again the provider, with his his cross finding Richard Bull, who placed his shot perfectly to give Pool the lead.

Their advantage was soon increased when man of the match Waite headed home Fleming's perfect cross.

Despite Town's efforts to get back into the match, Pool, led by outstanding captain Jordan Wagstaff in midfield, gave them no time on the ball as they lifted the trophy for a third time.

Meanwhile, Field have pulled themselves away from the fringes of the relegation battle into mid-table with two home victories.

They beat Pool 1-0, with Tom Ponter getting the goal, and Knaresborough Town 4-3 via Glyn Hirst (3) and Kieran Suddards.

Ilkley Town had fun at Headingley, winning 6-1 courtesy of Lee Spires (4) and Matt Whitehead (2).

Like Field, Wyke Wanderers have made home advantage count, climbing  from fifth to third in Division One on the back of a 2-0 victory over East End Park and a 2-1 triumph over Leeds Modernians, with Ryan Clay and Matt Conway scoring on each occasion.

Second-placed Rawdon Old Boys bounced back from a 2-0 defeat against Carlton Athletic in the West Riding County FA Challenge Cup semi-final at Fleet Lane with a 3-1 home success over Featherstone Colliery, courtesy of Ben Durrant (2) and Tom McMillan.

A Lee Reilly brace and a single by Dan Moriarty were not enough, however, for Oxenhope recreation, who went down 5-3 at home to Kippax, despite drawing 2-2 at half-time.

Michael Haran's goal was all that Baildon Trinity Athletic could manage in a 3-1 Division Two defeat at third-placed Newsome.

Pool's hard-fought 4-3 home victory over Robin Hood Athletic gave them hope of survival in Alliance Division One, but were pulled back to 3-3 from 3-1.

However, Jamie Alfar (2), James Braithwaite and Nick Hewitt saw the home side through.

Rivals Kippax won 4-2 at home to Oxenhope Recreation, whose goals came from Matt Hardy and Will Lee.

Leaders Field went down 3-2 at third-placed Beeston St Anthony's, with the losers' goals coming from Liam Charles and Tom Lambert.

Otley Town had a shocking day in Alliance Division Two, with the second-placed club losing 3-0 at home to second-from-bottom Old Centralians, whereas Ilkley Town climbed a place to fifth after a 3-2 home win against leaders Aberford Albion, courtesy of Chris Morris, Alistair Adams and James Hudson.

Wyke Wanderers, who had Jack Ryan-Wakeling sent off for two yellow cards, were beaten 3-1 at Kirk Deighton Rangers in the second round of the West Yorkshire League Trophy, with James Butterworth getting the consolation goal.
