Old Modernians 7 Ilkley Town 2

ILKLEY produced their worst performance of the season as table-topping Old Modernians sent them spinning out of the West Yorkshire League Cup.

Town were poor throughout. Their limp performance lacked energy and they failed to put their opponents under any pressure.

In contrast, Old Mods started quickly and demonstrated a real desire to win. Within three minutes they were 1-0 up when they scored with a header from a corner.

Things got worse four four minutes later when the Old Mods left winger used his pace to drive at goal. His cross was met with an excellent first-time finish.

Ilkley were given some hope when Ryan Dunne won a strong challenge and released Danny Bott whose shot from 25 yards sneaked under the goalkeeper.

From here Ilkley slowly grew into the game and began to match their opponents. Just when it looked like they might just start to get on top, another corner led to a second free header and Town were 3-1 down at half time.

Ilkley started the second half well with Richard Schofield unlucky to see the goalkeeper's fingertips do just enough to force his lob wide.

Within seconds the game was effectively over as Old Mods went 4-1 up after a long ball saw their main striker race clear and fire into the bottom corner.

Soon after the same player made it 5-1 with a smart turn and finish from the edge of the penalty area.

Ilkley at this point were finished and too many players stopped working hard and it was becoming all to easy for their opponents.

Despite this Ilkley managed to pull one back after 75 minutes. Good work by Jack Murray found Danny Bott who in turn placed his shot into the top corner.

Unfortunately there was no way back into the game and two simple long balls over the top, which should have been dealt with, resulted in two simple finishes and a 7-2 scoreline.

All in all a terrible afternoon and one that Ilkley need to learn from quickly if they are to have any chance of progressing in the County Cup on Saturday and continuing their positive league form.
