The men played the qualifying round of the Victory Cup, so named as the trophy was introduced to celebrate the end of the Great War. Taking various factors into account, the amount of sub-par rounds was quite remarkable.
Three players, including junior member Adam Connolly, finished on a nett 65 and could have been forgiven for being slightly miffed to still lose out by an astonishing three shots.
The First Team Manager, Mike Robinson, showed his charges how the course should be played and shot a gross 70 to finish eight under par.
Top four qualifiers were: M J Robinson 70 (8) 62; A Connolly 83 (18) 65; P Driver 75 (10) 65; A P Lee 78 (13) 65.
BRACKEN GHYLL: With the weather improving greatly the scores in both Divisions are also getting better. In the Carlsberg May Medal Division One Stephen Whitley kept up his impressive form with a sparkling 65 nett to win by two shots from Nick Page on 67 nett who in turn pipped Mark Robinson on 68 nett.
In Division Two Norman Pickard led the charge for home with an excellent 66 nett to record his first ever Medal win proving too hot for Andy Pepper, a further two shots behind on 68 nett. There was a four way countback for third place with Terry Walker claiming the honour and also winning the Chapman Challenge Trophy (for 24 to 28 handicappers). Missing out on the countback were Bob Marchant, David Banks and John W Williams all on 69 nett.
In the annual Crawford Bowl it was George Burrell who got his name on the Honours Board after a three way count-back with Andy Pepper and Past President Bill Armour all returning 42 points and all getting a trim from the Handicap Secretary.
