SCHOOLS from Bradford were among the medals at the West Yorkshire School Games Winter Festival.

Many schools from across the district competed, claiming a total of five medals, including one gold, three silver and one bronze, won across five different sports on an action-packed day at the Headingley Campus of Leeds Beckett University.

Calderdale schools led the way with three golds, Leeds were second with two, Bradford and Kirklees both won a gold, while Wakefield returned with a bronze medal.

Around 800 young people competed for the chance to be crowned West Yorkshire champions in boccia, disability primary sportshall athletics, hockey, netball and orienteering.

The festival was opened by Paralympian Hannah Cockroft, who addressed the athletes at the opening ceremony and was also on hand to present some of the winners with their medals.

Nigel Harrison, chief executive officer of Yorkshire Sport Foundation, said: “Congratulations to all the young people who did themselves, their schools and their districts proud.

“An event like this wouldn’t be possible without the support of a team of volunteers, and I’d like to thank them all for their invaluable contribution.”
