ILKLEY Harriers got off to a good start in the first West Yorkshire Cross Country League race of the season.

They recorded two individual victories and two team wins at Wakefield's Thornes Park on Saturday.

Pride of place went to Euan Brennan and Bethan Morley who won the under-17 boys and girls races respectively.

Brennan led the field home in 18min 20sec and helped his club to top the under-17 boys team charts.

Dominic Coy also had a good run to finish third in 18:54 while Cameron Reilly completed the scoring team in fifth place with a time of 19.38. Robbie Matthews was 14th in 22.13.

Morley produced an impressive run to take victory in the under-17 girls race where she recorded a time of 15:35.

The second team win came from the under-13 boys. Wilbur Summerson led the Ilkley challenge as he came home fourth in 10:58. He was backed up by Max Asheflford who was 11th in 11:12 while George Morley was 14th in 11:28.

The under-15 girls came second in their team competition. Bernadette Raven was their highest-placed finisher in seventh place with a time of 14:03.

The scoring team was completed by Nina Peace, who was 16th in 14:30, and Catherine Westhead, 22nd in 14:55.

Ilkley were also represented in the race by Pippa Threlfall, 31st in 15:19, Poppy Ander , 32nd in 15:41, and Charlotte Elston, 38th in 16:31.

The Harriers under-13 girls were second in the team event with fifth-placed Phoebe Worrall leading their challenge in 11:48.

Charlotte Kenneth, eight in 11:58, and Lucia Storey, 16th in 12:18, completed the winning line-up.

The Harriers had six further runners in the race, 26 Robyn Anderson 12:31, 33 Erin Doyle 12:44, 52 Amy Brown-Carrera 13:48, 73 Neve Tennant 15:33, 64 Angela Hicks 15:42, 75 Evie Dennett 15:55.

Nathan Guy's third-placed finish helped the under-15 boys team to come sixth. Adam Mitchell, 29th in 16:15, and Adam Townsend, 37th in 17:11, were the other scorers.

In the senior races, Jack Wood was fifth for the men in 33:15 in a race won by Skyrac's Daniel Garbutt (32:40). Matthew Cox, 33rd in 36:14, and Tim Ashelford, 72nd in 39:41, were also competing.

Jemima Elgood was the first Ilkley finisher in the ladies race in sixth place. She returned a time of 21:24.

Kate Archer, 27th in 23:33, and Sally Malir, 53rd in 25:46, completed the Harriers contingent.

Jean Sullivan completed the Heart of Eden half marathon on Sunday, a low key, friendly, hilly road race with beautiful scenery starting in Appleby-in-Westmorland and taking in a number of picturesque villages along the foothills of the northern Pennines.

She finished 56th in 1hr 53min 32sec.
