JACK Wood produced a determined performance for Great Britain in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships at Premana in Italy.

The conditions were tough for the runners with a torrential downpour making the 32-kilometre course with three steep climbs and tricky descents even more demanding.

The Ilkley Harriers athlete finished 51st in a time of 3hours 59 minutes 39 seconds and was the fourth counting athlete for the GB team.

His clubmate Jane McCarthy participated in the Glacier 3000 race from the stunning Swiss town of Gstaad on Saturday.

The uphill only route covered 26km with 2,000m of climbing, starting with a more gentle 15km of trail and road followed by 11km of gruelling uphill climbing to finish on the Glacier at 3,000m.

McCarthy recorded a time of 3:42:01 and was the 22nd lady finisher in a race won by Shaban Mustafa in 2:32:49

Norman Bush ran the Eshton Moor fell race on Thursday in 44:49 to take 40th position in a race won by Ted Mason of Wharfedale Harriers in 33:03.

Bush followed up by competing in the Hellifield Gala fell race on Saturday in 35:35 for 26th place.

Caroline Howe continued her great form competing in the York 10k at the weekend and beat her personal best by nearly three minutes to finish in 46:12 to claim 46th place.

Diane Kitchen was the only other Harrier there and came home in 54:29 for 1,791st in a field of 5,286 runners.

A good number of Harries ran in the Borrowdale fell race on Saturday which is one of the classics of the Lakes, taking in Scafell Pike, Great Gable and Dale Head in 27km and 2,000m of climbing.

Heavy rain preceded the race making for slippy and boggy terrain. Scafell Pike was shrouded in clag and quite a few runners headed off in the wrong direction, struggling to find the scree run off the summit.

The last climb up Dale Head and the descent through the slate quarry finished off any good feelings left in legs.

Billy Bland’s course record remains as Carl Bell from Keswick won in 2.50.05. Paul Carman was the first Harrier home in a superb time of just over four hours.

Dick Waddington was next home with a personal best of quite a few minutes compared to his last attempt in 2012.

Jamie Hutchinson and Kate Archer finished close together followed by Alison Weston, Outi Kamarainen and Jann Smith.

Results: 94 Paul Carman 4.05.31, 137 Dick Waddington 4.25.29 PB, 178 Jamie Hutchinson 4.46.41, 180 Kate Archer 4.47.14, 187 Alison Weston 4.53.39 (3rd V50), 200 Outi Kamarainen 4.59.53, 207 Jann Smith 5.05.21

There was another good turn-out for the Round Hill fell race from Timble on Sunday.

Ben Sheppard had a great race to finish fifth in just under the hour and Michael Lomas was also in the top ten.
