AIRIENTEERS ran a successful event on Burley and Ilkley Moors on Sunday.

Mid-race rain failed to deter competitors from across the north of England from tackling some of the best moorland in Britain.

The best local result was achieved by Guiseley’s David Alcock who won the Brown course.

Other successes included George Stevens (3rd) and Jack Wood (4th) on the longest, Black course, and Shirley and Paul Wood from Addingham who were both third on their respective courses.

Ilkley planner, Tony Thornley, produced some challenging, technical courses which were praised by the runners.

A highlight on the longest courses was a 2km leg from the Keighley Gate Road to the Cow and Calf.

Post-race discussion showed a wide variety of different routes were taken on this leg.

For the first time, thanks to Ed Bromet and the Bingley Moor Partnership, the longer courses also crossed Burley Moor.

Airienteers were grateful for the support of Richard Perham of Bradford Leisure Services, Ilkley Community Transport and Ilkley Grammar School.

The next major Wharfedale orienteering event is at Danefield on April 30. Further details from the Airienteers website www.aire.org.uk.
