ILKLEY Harriers Jane McCarthy and Dick Waddington found a different way to spend the Bank Holiday weekend.

On Friday, August 26, they took part in their first ultra in the Alps – the CCC.

It covered 101km and included 6,100 metres of ascent across three countries – Courmayeur (Italy), Champex (Switzerland) and Chamonix (France) – with stunning scenery around the Mont-Blanc region.

It started with a minute's silence in the centre of Courmayeur for the victims of the earthquake, and then a helicopter and drone went overhead to film the mass start at 9am to the music of Vangelis.

The heat could be felt immediately and continued until the pair came down to Champex-Lac around 7pm, having gained over 200 places.

They continued to overtake runners throughout the night section, and the last checkpoint at Flegere above Chamonix preceded a steep then fast seven-kilometre descent to the finish in the town centre.

There was a 35 per cent drop out rate but Dick and Jane finished in 358th position out of 2,129 (with Dick 96th and Jane 22nd in their respective categories).

Jack Wood completed a trio of BOFRA (British Open Fell Running Association) show fell races over the bank holiday weekend.

The first was Malham Show on Saturday, August 27, where he came third in 17min 40sec, only nine seconds behind winner Harry Coates from Wallsend.

Jack then won the Reeth Show fell race on Bank Holiday Monday in 17:03, with Iain Gibbons taking fifth in 18:56.

Meanwhile, in the Kilnsey Show race on Tuesday, August 30, Jack took fourth place in 8:46, with Outi Kamarainen 50th in 12:37, Norman Bush 55th in 12:51 and Mary Gibbons 71st in 15:09 (with a sprained ankle).

Oscar Stapleton was first overall in the Skipton Park run, and Jann Smith had a good weekend, being first lady in the Harrogate park run on Saturday in 21:20, followed by third lady and 1st LV40 at Bradley Show on Sunday in 34:17.

Also at the show were Martin Archer, eighth 27:44, Paul Carman ninth 27:47, Rob Carr 12th 28:25 and Ben Joynson 20th 31:02.

There was a good turnout of Harriers at Wetherby 10k on Sunday.

First Harrier home was Richard Joel in 40:08, and first female Harrier was Lucy Williamson in 42:20.

Other results included 41:32 Derek Oliver; 49:56 Sarah Hayes; 50:58 Stephanie Fox; 54:34 Peter Lewis; 60:44 Deborah Nicholson and 61:07 Sue Williamson.
