ILKLEY Grammar School students Lucy Haines and Laura King competed for Great Britain at the recent European Youth Orienteering Championships.

The 17-year-olds are members of local orienteering club Airienteers and are part of the Yorkshire and Humber Junior Squad.

Last autumn Laura and Lucy were selected to join the national British Orienteering Talent Development Squad.

Held in south-east Poland the 2016 European Youth Orienteering Championships comprised of an acclimatisation event, opening ceremony, long-distance and relay races in the forest together with an urban sprint race.

Almost 400 competitors represented countries spanning Portugal to Russia and Israel to Norway. The orienteering was challenging with temperatures approaching 30°C, complex terrain and up against the best young orienteers in Europe.

Laura and Lucy raced in the 92-strong W18 class. Lucy's best performance was 14th in the long-distance race whilst Laura's was 17th in the sprint race around the historic town of Jaros?aw.

Joining Team GBR for the first time was a great opportunity and a fitting climax to their season's quality coaching, dedicated training and successful performance.
