SIX Ilkley Harriers runners have won county selection after impressing in Saturday's Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at a muddy Lightwater Valley theme park.

Once again Tom Adams led the way as he took second place in the senior men's race. He recorded a time of 37min 16sec in the testing conditions and finished seven seconds down on winnerJonathan Thewlis of Notts AC.

Adams will be joined in the Yorkshire team for the Inter Counties Championships in Birmingham in March by Poppy Anderson (8th U13 girls), Bethan Morley (2nd U15 girls), Euan Brennan (6th U15 boys), Jemima Elgood (6th U17 women) and Lucy Williamson (5th U20 women).

The U15 boys also came away with bronze in the team prize. Brennan was backed up by Dominic Coy (13th) and Cameron Reilly (21st) as Ilkley finished behind Keighley & Craven and Rotherham.

In the senior men's race, Dave Westhead (110th 45:41 ), Steve Coy (137th 47:06) and Mark Iley (189th 50:29) battled to the finish.

Four women completed in the senior race and the first Harrier home was Hilda Coulsey (107th 50:05) with Gaenor Coy close behind (109th 50:15). Petra Bijsterveld (113th 51:22) and Julie Elmes (130th 55:51) were not much further back.

Sisters Lucy and Joanne Williamson ran extremely well in the junior women’s race to come fifth (28:11) and 11th (31:05) respectively. The total number of junior harriers running was an impressive 25 with the Ilkley teams all well placed.

Ben Sheppard had an impressive result in Sunday's Temple Newsam Ten. He finished seventh with a time of 65:21 in an event organised by St Theresa's AC.

Alex Stanley-Hyde also ran well to finish in the top half of the race in 92:00. The event is a challenging trail race with a blend of muddy hills and sections of hard surfaces.
