ILKLEY’S players have been warned not to rest on their laurels.

Head of rugby Rhys Morgan and head coach Nathan Smith made the point loud and clear at Tuesday’s training session.

It followed their emphatic 45-14 win over Blackburn in their final warm up game on Saturday.

Morgan said: “If we are complacent an d think that everything is ok then we will not be prepared for the start of the league season.”

The Dalesmen face Kendal at home on Saturday week and Morgan added: “We don’t want to go in half cooked.

“We scored some good tries against Blackburn but we aren’t the finished article.

“We were pleased with our scrums and line-outs and there was another try from a rolling maul.

“But there is still a lot of work to be done before the Kendal game. They are a good, experienced side and we know that you have to be on your game in the North Premier League.”

The Ilkley squad are heading for Darley this weekend for a team bonding and preparation for the season session.

They will also be doing some preparation work before returning for further training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday.

One thing that Morgan is keen to address is discipline, and in particular the concession of penalties around the ruck.

He said: “We gave away a lot of penalties in our game at Bridlington and it was clear to see that the players who featured that day had addressed the problem in the first half on Saturday.

“The problem resurfaced when we brought on players who hadn’t played at Bridlington. We gave away a lot of penalties and that enabled Blackburn the chance to get into the game.

“We also had Josh Cockerham yellow carded so we need all our players to be aware of how the ruck is being refereed.

“Penalties can prove very costly both in terms of points and lost momentum.

“We will be doing all we can to reduce the penalty count because in tight games it can be the difference.”
