Ben Rhydding 0 Wakefield 1

AFTER an exciting battle at College Grove which resulted in a 2-2 draw and a point apiece, it was Ben Rhydding’s turn to host league leaders Wakefield at Countances Way.

A well rehearsed Ben Rhydding press made life difficult for the Wakefield defence, with forwards Kate Hesketh and Jo Ellis picking up stray passes in their opponents' defending third.

The home side placed continual pressure on the visitors, but Wakefield proved why they had only 12 scored past them all season and refused to let Ben Rhydding convert their chances in the D.

With a similarly impressive Ben Rhydding defending record, the home side proved just as difficult to get past, and at the interval it was still level with neither side allowing the other much room to play in.

Several chances went begging for Ben Rhydding, including two that were whipped across the face of an open goal and one drag flick from Rebecca Dallas that was saved on the line.

Wakefield may not have had most of the opportunities on goal, but when it came to Cat Horn by the penalty spot, she capitalised on a confused Rhydding defence and put her side in front in the 53rd minute.

Nearing the end of the game, Ben Rhydding’s player of the match Amy Cordukes stepped up to take a free hit on the edge of the circle. She dribbled into the D, and fired it past the Wakefield’s goalkeeper, but the equaliser was disallowed by the umpire for not taking the ball five metres before it was taken into the circle.

A barrage of Rhydding short corners was defended well by Wakefield, who were triumphant when the final whistle sounded and remain top of the league.

Ben Rhydding take the trip up to Whitely Bay on Saturday for their final outdoor game of 2015.
