City of Manchester 2 Ben Rhydding 5

BEN Rhydding clinched a place in the last 16 of the National Trophy after winning a hard-fought encounter on Sunday.

With a number of their older players resting after their exertions of the previous day at Newcastle, Ben Rhydding fielded a young side.

Tom Burton and Aaron Terry gave a good account of themselves in a difficult game and the welcome return of Myles Locke gave the defence a big boost.

Rhydding scored within five minutes when Matty Bairstow collected a through ball from Max Helme and beat the goalkeeper with a fine shot.

Number two came Ollie Hopkinson Cook who popped up on the post to turn home after good work from Ethan Hodson.

Struan Connor gave Manchester all sorts of problems and it was a snap ball through from him that led to Elliot Dowley scoring the third goal with a stunning deflection.

Complacency and fatigue saw Rhydding punished as Manchester scored two breakaway goals to come back to 3-2.

Rhydding stepped up their game again and Matthew Ramshaw slotted a ball through for Max Helme to touch home.

Ramshaw finished things off with a nice drag flick from a corner to round off the scoring.
