Youngster forges victory for Rhydding ladies

2:28pm Thursday 2nd October 2008

Ben Rhydding Ladies lls 3 Berwick-upon-Tweed 2 Ben Rhydding Ladies Seconds’ North League (East Division) programme got underway on Saturday with a hard-earned victory against visitors Berwick. The home side responded to Berwick’s traditionally strong attacking centre pairing by introducing Issy MacDonald to the midfield, superbly backed up by Jo Skirrow in the heart of defence, dealing capably with the visitors’ attacking forays. Ben Rhydding started the stronger, enjoying the lion’s share of possession and creating a number of attacking threats. Newcomer Eleanor Rigby was in firm control down the right flank, creating numerous opportunities for the front runners. Vicky Winters and Sarah Whitehead worked hard in attack without managing to convert any opportunities, and Hannah Drakard made some fine runs, latching on to through balls and driving into the area, giving the visiting defence plenty to think about. After seeing a number of short corner chances go begging, the home side finally took the lead with the simplest of goals, Rigby’s quickly-taken free hit diverted into the path of Whitehead who slipped a first time shot past an outstretched ‘keeper. Confidence riding high in the second-half Rhydding continued in the same vein, but found Berwick offered tougher resistance, a slightly changed formation denying Rhydding some of the time and space of the first period.
