League Cup success for Trojans

Burley Trojans 2 Bedale 1
Burley entertained Bedale Town in the third round of the League Cup looking to reverse the 5-1 drubbing handed out in the league fixture in early December.

Player-manager Jamie Davey welcomed back several first team regulars and was instrumental himself in the opening exchanges playing in the withdrawn role behind Lee McGowan and helping to create several chances in the first half hour.

Midfield schemer Peter Sumner threatened from long range on a couple of occasions but on 35 minutes and against the run of play the Bedale striker nipped in front of Burley centre-half Jamie Arkell to slot past Jack Marchant from six yards.

Further chances fell to Jonny Keith and Oli Blair but the Trojans went in at the break a goal behind.

With the wind behind them in the second-half and with the back four of Hanogue, Loyd, Arkell and Renton looking particularly solid it was only a matter of time before the Trojans would find the breakthrough their hard work deserved.

On 65 minutes Davey robbed a defender as he dallied in possession and he squared to McGowan who found the bottom corner from 11 yards. Five minutes later another Sumner effort was deflected wide and the resulting corner from substitute Tom McDermott was glanced in at the near post by Davey. It was a fitting reward for the experienced striker who battled courageously throughout.

Further fine defending from Hanogue and in particular Man-of-the-Match Craig Renton meant that the final minutes passed without any further threat to the Trojan's goal.
