Trojans gain first ever win over Sherwood

Sherwood 2
Burley Trojans 3
Following the previous week's narrow defeat by league leaders Thirsk in a five goal thriller, Burley bounced back to take all three points from current champions Sherwood in yet another fascinating encounter.
Previous matches between these two sides have often been tight and always fiercely contested and this was no exception.
Sherwood settled the better and had the majority of the early possession demonstrating a slick passing game despite the challenging conditions.
Sherwood could not however convert this possession into goals and paid the price when their defence failed to clear a relatively innocuous ball into the box.
Oli Blair was quick to capitalise on this and his pressure in the scramble which ensued forced a defender to turn the ball into his own goal. This visibly lifted Burley who finished the half stronger and actually started to believe a shock victory was possible.
The second-half started in a similar fashion to the first, with precise passing from Sherwood and committed defending and counter attacking football from Burley.
Burley's captain Kieren Hanogue returned from injury to bring a renewed confidence to the back line with Pete Sumner pulling the strings in midfield.
Whenever Sherwood did manage to breach the Burley defence the impressive Jack Marchant dealt comfortably with any attempts on goal.
Burley extended their lead with 55 minutes on the clock when a Wood cross was met by a trio of Burley attackers with McDermott, Blair and Hoskins all having attempts on goal blocked before Hoskins finally drilled the ball into the top of the net to spark wild celebrations from the Burley midfielder.
Sherwood threw caution to the wind and sent on an extra forward to try and get back in the game.
Burley striker Tom McDermott was quick to capitalise on the extra space this created as he latched onto a speculative through ball.
It looked as if he had lost his best chance to score as a Sherwood defender managed to force him wide but with a trademark turn the Burley striker left his bewildered marker for dead and then clinically slotted the ball across the goal into the bottom corner to give Burley a three goal advantage.
This provoked a Sherwood revival with two goals from close range in quick succession to set up a thrilling finale. In the final few minutes tempers threatened to boil over as both Jonny Keith and Peter Sumner incurred the wrath of the referee and the defending became more and more desperate.
When a Sherwood forward fired over from close range in the last minute Burley realised it was going to be their day and the three points were in the bag.
Manager Jamie Davey was delighted to have recorded Burley's first ever win over their Harrogate rivals and was impressed by the work ethic and commitment shown by all of his players. Match point was won by midfielder Richard Wood.
