Esholt send shockwaves round league

ESHOLT sent shockwaves round the JCT600 Bradford League with their seven wicket victory at Pudsey Congs.

The newly-promoted club reduced Congs to 43 for five before Andrew Bairstow (34) and the reliable Babar Butt hoisted their tally to 155 for eight on a damp wicket.

Left-arm spinner Ben Platt did most to restrict Congs with three for 43 but after tea none of the Esholt batsmen failed as they reached their target with seven balls to spare.

Paul Cummins made 40, his younger brother Mark 23, overseas player Shahzaib Khan 37 and Gulsheraz Ahmed 30 not out as Congs suffered their second straight setback at the Britannia Ground.

It ended up being a great day for Esholt, as the second XI also beat the Congs. Batting first, Esholt scored 200-8, mainly thanks to Tony Brassington's 40. In reply, Pudsey were bowled out for 113, with all the bowlers chipping in with wickets.

As well as the league double over Pudsey, both teams are through into the next round of the Priestley Cup and Shield after victories over Brighouse. Paul Cunningham continued his good form with 60 not out as the firsts won by seven wickets but the seconds' match was closer, with Esholt sneaking to a one wicket win.

There was no luck however for Yeadon. Their disappointing batting form continued, after being dismissed for 49 in less than 20 overs. Four players were out without scoring whilst the top score was a measly 12 runs from opener Andrew Robertson.

Bradford and Bingley's opening bowlers Richard McCarthy and Will Briggs both claimed four wickets as they tore through the Yeadon line up.

The batting performance is a mounting concern for Captain David Leather who said: "It's really letting us down. When we're in a bit of trouble we're not fronting up and digging in. Lots of sides find themselves 30-4 or something like that, and manage to get themselves to 150-160. We're just crumbling which is a real concern."

In reply the Bees steadily knocked off their target in short of 30 overs. There was an early scare when Carl Sharp was bowled out by Greg Lamber for a duck.

However, it proved to be a minor setback and White Rose player Scott Etherington guided Bingley to their target with 17 not out.

After taking five wickets, Yeadon will take heart from another pleasing bowling display but it was too big an ask for the bowlers to protect such a small target.

Leather felt an improved batting display could have brought an upset saying: "If we'd have got another 40 runs on Saturday, I am confident we could have won that game. It took them nearly 30 overs to get 49 runs and they were five down. On paper it may have looked a walk over but I think Bingley knew they were in a fight at the end."

After two tough away games, Yeadon will host their first home game against East Bierley on Saturday and Leather feels the home factor will be an important one.

He said: "I don't think many sides relish coming to play at Yeadon and we need to make that work to our advantage."

The game also sees Grant Soames and Greg Lambert face their old clubs. Lambert has been one of the major stars for Yeadon this season and Leather was keen to give his praise to the opening bowler.

"Greg bowled really well for us again on Saturday and he's in some good form," said Leather.

Still positive, Leather was also pleased with the team's fielding efforts adding: "Our bowling and fielding has shown that if we can put up a decent score, sides will find it difficult to beat us."

Yeadon seconds' match against Cleckheaton was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch but they were able to play in the Priestley Shield on Monday.

Unfortunately for them there will also be no repeat of last season's semi- final after they were defeated at Hanging Heaton.

Batting first, Heaton set a competitive score of 239-9. Paul Machell was the pick of the bowlers with 3-26 and four maidens in his spell.

In reply, Machell and Liam Bishop set Yeadon on their way with a solid opening stand. However, none of the batsmen were able to hit a sufficient score to keep Yeadon in the hunt.

Ben Gilbert caused the Yeadon batsman problems and eventually finished with 4-18.

Jon Carey (31) and Ben Galley (30) did offer Yeadon some late hope, however it was too little too late. Yeadon were eventually bowled out for 151.

l There is a full weekend of fixtures, with Yeadon entertaining East Bierley on Saturday and Hanging Heaton in the cup on Sunday. The seconds travel to Farsely.

Esholt will hope to make it back to back wins when facing Brighouse whilst their second XI travel to Lightcliffe.

'Fear hitting support for trail' claim

By Paul Langan

FEAR may be preventing supporters of a path on the old railway line between Bolton Abbey and Addingham coming forward to help turn the idea into a reality, a campaigner has claimed.
Andrew Scull has been at the forefront of the local drive to create the cycle, foot and bridle path and he feels that the recent consultation exercise shows that there is strong support in the village for it.
But Mr Scull thinks people are put off from displaying their backing by the behaviour of a minority of the opposition group.

Mr Scull was on the Wharfe-dale Trail Forum which carried out and arranged the funding for the consultation exercise and has been criticism because of his role. He was reported to the Standards Board for England accused of misbehaviour as a parish councillor - an accusation the board rejected.
Mr Scull has tried to keep his role as a parish councillor and his involvement in the Sustrans project separate.
But it is the harassment he has been subjected to which has caused the most difficulty for him.
He said: "I have been subjected to an organised campaign of personal harassment for the past year - most of it carried out anonymously.
"I have had hate mail - people have been ringing up people who employed me 20 years ago and someone has even rung up my Dad posing as someone else.
"A lot of people who would support it are a little shy because they don't want to be harassed themselves."
Mr Scull said it was only a small minority of opponents who were responsible for harassment.
He said it was now up to other supporters to get on board as members of a new steering group to take the project forward.
The group will have no support from Addingham Parish Council which has resolved to ignore the matter until landowners have been persuaded to support it.
And Bradford Council seems to have washed its hands of the project, after providing £4,000 worth of Council Tax payers' money for the consultation.
A council spokesperson said: "We have noted the consultation report but we have no plans to take any further action.
"If we receive any plans or applications for the trail in the future then we will deal with them through the usual planning process."
Mr Scull said that he would help with the setting up of the steering group if people contacted him through the Wharfedale Trail website.
He said: "The bottom line is that the consultation has shown that there is a great deal of support for this.
"It is up to the people who support it to come forward and drive it forward."
He said unless that happened the majority would lose out, adding: "My role from here would be to facilitate people who are taking it forward."

It is perfectly clear to all now why the Australians refer to us as a nation of ......

"WHINGING POMS" !!!

How we must all now pity poor Councillor Andrew James Scull.

I am sure it has not gone un-noticed by the readers of the Ilkley Gazette
that every time he comes up against opposition or bad news, poor Councillor
Scull is the first to throw his rattle out of the pram.

Yet again poor Councillor Scull whinges on because things are not going his
way and ... yes ... yet again blames his various failures on mysterious
persons unknown.

For the record, Councillor Scull, let's get those verified facts back in the
public eye.

(All of the following facts having previously been verified AND, for
Councillor Andrew Scull's benefit, are in the "public domain")

LIES ABOUT LANDOWNER SUPPORT
(made by David Hall of Sustrans)
FACT - David Hall of Sustrans was quoted in the minutes of a meeting held on
12th July 2005 (where Jeff McQuillan just happened to be present) as
saying:- "He (David Hall) said he had spoken to the major landowners and
received a positive reaction, particularly from the Bolton Abbey estate"

UNBALANCED CONSULTATION LITERATURE
i.e. All the "pros" BUT none of the "cons"
(prepared by Jeff McQuillan)
FACT - Previously reported in the Ilkley Gazette

UNBALANCED AND OFFENSIVE FORUM WEBSITE
(created by Councillor Andrew Scull)
FACT - Councillor Scull apologised to the other Forum members AND
acknowledged full responsibility for the content on the website

UNFOUNDED ACCUSATIONS OF INTIMIDATION
(made by Jeff McQuillan)
FACT - North Yorkshire Police confirm no action taken

UNFOUNDED ACCUSATIONS OF THEFT
(made by Jeff McQuillan & Councillor Andrew Scull)
FACT - West Yorkshire Police confirm no action taken

ATTEMPTS TO BULLY LANDOWNERS
(carried out by Sustrans)
FACT - Previously reported in the Ilkley Gazette

How dare poor Councillor Andrew Scull cast the first stone (as per usual)
and accuse others of harassment when, on 12th July 2005, this sorry affair
was kicked off by his pal David Hall of SUSTRANS with a lie about landowner
support for this Trail.

Proof of this lie has been clearly minuted AND, under Freedom of Information
legislation, is available for all to see.

Councillor Andrew Scull, is it really a surprise that the good folk of
Addingham do not wish to be involved in the continuing harassment that those
against this Trail proposal have had to put up with for the last 3 years ?

Councillor Scull's suggestion of a new "steering group" is laughable .......
no doubt it is his intention that it will have the same ethos as his failed
(so-called) "Forum" which .....

NEVER MET AS A GROUP

NEVER ISSUED ANY MINUTES

NEVER PRODUCED ANY ACCOUNTS

What a relief it is that the good folk of Addingham & Ilkley are represented
(and protected) by other local Councillors who have a better understanding
of such matters:-

FACT - Addingham Parish Council have resolved not to support the concept
unless all the landowners are in agreement

FACT - Bradford Metropolitan District Council have no plans to take the
Trail proposal forward

THE WHARFEDALE TRAIL

A CORRUPT, FLAWED & HIGHLY PREDICTABLE CONSULTATION

STOP WHINGING COUNCILLOR SCULL ..... "The bottom line is that the consultation" ...... IS OVER !!!
