Guiseley teach Oxford lesson in finishing

Guiseley strengthened their hold on second spot in the Blue Square Bet North Division with a comfortable victory under the dreaming spires.

The Lions returned from the seat of learning with only Oxford City needing to learn how to win matches.

Guiseley did not have more possession or many more chances than the home side but they were clinical in their finishing.

It took them just over a minute to break the deadlock, with Wayne Brooksby tapping in from close range after a couple of efforts following a corner had been blocked.

Midway through the first half, James Walshaw had two chances in as many minutes to increase the lead. The first was saved while he lifted the second over the target but was clattered by the Oxford keeper in doing so.

The forward was struggling after that collision and was withdrawn by manager Steve Kittrick early into the second half.

However, his replacement Josh Wilson doubled Guiseley’s lead when he headed home Andy Holdsworth’s 75th-minute free-kick.

It was another introduction from the bench who added the gloss to the victory. Nicky Boshell fired in a left-foot shot in the last minute.

Guiseley remain second but are now just one point behind pace-setters Brack-ley Town, who lost their 100 per cent record with a 1-1 draw at Colwyn Bay. However, Brackley have played one game less.

The Lions now hope Walshaw will recover before Tuesday’s home game against Stalybridge Celtic.

Club director Stuart Allen said: “Everything went well for us on Saturday and we were smiling on the long journey home, which makes a big difference.

“As far as I’m aware, Wally is the only injury but that could settle down by Tuesday.

“He had stud marks on his inner thigh after the game because of the coming together with the keeper, so it looks like one of those painful but not long-term injuries.”
