Ben Rhydding Ladies suffered a disa- ppointing defeat in their opening National North Conference league game.

From the first whistle Durham had the visitors on the back foot, dominating most of the possession.

Newly-promoted Ben Rhydding struggled with the fast tempo and ball pace as they found themselves 1-0 down and chasing the game after just five minutes.

The Ilkley side managed to settle a little and as their possession of the ball increased so did their confidence.

New signing Jen Wilson made some impressive runs down the left feeding the ball in for Sarah Bell who did her best to create openings.

However Durham defended well and quashed the few attempts by the Rhydding forwards to get a shot on target.

Ben Rhydding’s midfield and defence were kept busy by Durham and they had to work hard to keep the score at 1-0.

Rebecca Fox made some perfectly- timed tackles and goalie Holly Crank pulled off several fantastic saves.

The second half started in much the same way as the first.

Durham surged forward and passed the ball at pace.

Panic and a lack of composure on the ball by Rhydding led to mistakes.

Possession was given away too often by the Ilkley side in all areas of the pitch.

Jodie Bridger and Rachelle Le Bourdon worked hard in central midfield and endeavoured to keep the Durham attacks at bay.

The pressure told when the home side earned a penalty corner after a quick attack down the right resulted in a foul in Rhydding’s D. This was deftly converted.

Shortly after, Rhydding pulled a goal back from a top-quality Le Bourdon penalty-corner strike, created by a skilful run into the D by Jess Purvis.

Any thoughts of a Ryhdding comeback were ruined by another Durham goal from a penalty corner, deflected into the net by a Rhydding stick.

Durham added a fourth in the last five minutes.

Ben Rhydding face Doncaster at home on Saturday at 1.30pm.
