Late fightback seals victory for Otley
Dudley Kingswinford 32 Otley 34 Otley showed great maturity, twice going well behind but continuing in their exciting fashion to overhaul a team unused to losing.
They conceded an early score, a knock-on at the kick-off giving Dudley an attacking scrum which they used to good effect. No 6 Peter Knight went over in the corner for fly-half Jon Higgins to convert. Howeve,r they soon replied, a turnover giving No 7 Dan Temm a half-opening which he exploited, fly-half Ben Collins converting before leaving the field with an injury.
Quick line-out ball saw centre Jack Mackie break through to put winger James Twomey away but, making good use of a strong breeze, the home side began to exert pressure and retook the lead with a try from full-back Simon Fletcher, Higgins adding the conversion and then kicking a penalty.
A penalty set up a 5m line-out , Dudley using the ball well to get winger Matt Farrington over to establish a 10 point lead which was halved just before the break when scrum-half Steve Depledge snapped up a loose ball to scuttle over.
The Otley pack began to flex their muscles, a great drive disrupting the defence for winger Wood to score, but they paid for over-elaboration when No 7 Joe Carpenter picked up at the base of an Otley scrum to charge over, Higgins converting then adding a penalty.
With just eight minutes remaining Otley rose to the challenge, harrying the home line for skipper Adam Blades to crash over, Depledge stepping up to convert and right on the death Twomey was given the ball and his speed did the rest.
