Bradford City new boy Jones steps on the Gaz to help blow away Guiseley in friendly clash

Guiseley could not keep up with the Joneses but an injury to Ricky Ravenhill cast a shadow on City’s night at Nethermoor.
Both Gary and Ritchie Jones were on target before a second-half double from Nahki Wells confirmed an emphatic fourth straight win for Phil Parkinson’s men.
But, more significantly, Ravenhill limped off after a heavy challenge to throw the first spanner in the works for Parkinson as the season moves nearer.
The City boss said: “I think he’s got a problem. We’ll get his knee scanned to assess it.
“It was a tackle in the midfield area but sometimes you get that against a local non-league team.”
While Ravenhill presented City with a potential headache, midfield partner Gary Jones emphasised once again why he looks to be such a crucial piece in the puzzle.
These games may have minimal significance in the big picture but don’t try telling the fiercely-competitive midfield warhorse. He chased, barked and hustled as if this was a promotion-decider not just another warm-up against non-league neighbours.
The City fans who crowded round all four sides of the ground will have been impressed by his hunger and will to win every ball.
The ease with which they won an occasionally feisty encounter will also boost confidence. City have tended to struggle with Guiseley in recent times.
There was no Garry Thompson again, although he is back in light training now. Andrew Davies also missed out.
The only trialist on view was England under-19 defender Jack Mills, formerly at Reading, who came on for the last 20 minutes.
James Hanson , back on his old stomping ground, quickly won a flick on over Danny Ellis for Wells to fire over the bar.
Luke Oliver then climbed unmarked at the far post to meet Kyel Reid’s free-kick but nodded behind.
City continued to hunt a goal and Gary Jones spun to shoot but his effort cannoned wide off Simon Ainge.
Hanson failed to connect with an ambitious overhead attempt but Reid followed up with a thumping first-timer which was blocked by Ellis.
Guiseley had shown little attacking presence and when Rory McArdle was momentarily wrong-footed, Oliver was quickly across to deny Danny Forrest a glimpse of daylight against his former employers.
The home side’s first chance fell to right back Jamie Clarke, who drove wide through a crowd of players. Guiseley were having a go but finding little joy against the impassable Oliver.
Reid switched to the right flank and sent Wells away with a peach of a pass that the Bermudian could not bring down as keeper Steve Drench advanced.
A few tackles were flying in and Nicky Boshell was fortunate to escape with just a ticking off after catching Ravenhill late. The City skipper felt the repercussions later.
The breakthrough arrived after 34 minutes with Wells the provider, cutting back from the byline for Gary Jones to slide home the goal his efforts warranted.
Three minutes later, namesake Ritchie got in on the act with a shot that blooped up over Drench as he cut in from the right.
The scorer made way for Will Atkinson at the break, getting a breather after a full match’s exertions in Bray.
But Gary Jones remained in the thick of it and Hanson headed his well-flighted free-kick straight at Drench.
James Walshaw warmed Matt Duke’s fingers but it was an isolated effort and City made it 3-0 just after the hour with a belting header from Wells, flashing the ball home from Ravenhill’s cross.
Wells could have doubled his tally straight away, only to be thwarted by Drench’s block, and then ballooned over from a Hanson knockdown.
But he got his double with his final touch of the ball – firing home into the bottom corner from 30 yards.
Drench, who had an uncomfortable time throughout, was slow moving across but it was a decent strike for Wells to sign off on before leaving to a big ovation.
CITY: Duke, Darby (Mills 70), McArdle, Oliver, Meredith, R Jones (Atkinson 46), G Jones, Ravenhill (Baker 69), Reid (Bass 79), Hanson (Connell 79), Wells (Hannah 79). Sub (not used): McLaughlin.

*From a second-hand article comes a third hand opinion*
we may put Guisley down as non-league opponents but they passed it quite well whilst rarely threatening goal and it was not a dirty game.
lets now forget we are 4th division and we need to pass it better and get a winger to complement Kyle Reid on the other side.
we have only played 1 prof. outfit so far and won 2.1 so lets not get carried away with 4 wins. There is lots to do to turn that in to results in this division. Other than Hanson and Oliver we looked a bit lightweight in certain parts of the pitch.
The strikers look ok with Wells and Reid having some quality about them and Hanson too. Ross Hannah should get a look in.
It is midfield and out wide we need to improve or the players need to step up and show what they can do when Saturday comes.

" Freddy - you weren't even there so how can you comment on a tackle you never saw? "

Whether I saw this bad tackle, or not. It is an ever present problem and major worry for ALL PROFESSIONAL CLUBS and Players. It is even more prevalent in CUP Matches--where lower league players can cause very serious injuries--for some obvious reasons to me--as I have been a City Player- in the very distant past.
*
I re-iterate my observation-that the Club need to consider any further so termed 'Friendly' matches during pre-season build up. Unless strict agreed rules are applied -with the co-operation of both clubs players', and match officials concerned.

I really wish they would get rid of those **** adverts on here, they are so annoying when listening to music in another tab, especially when they restart. They are the only reason I do not come on here at times. They do actually drive me away at times when I am scouring footy/rugby news, I click open multiple links on newsnow football, at times I open all links apart from the T and at times. Please sort it out.

Meredith looked solid if a little reluctant to get forward. On the otherside the diminutive Darby seems to enjoy bombing on. McArdle looked confident and very comfortable and I believe his partnership with Davies will be key to a successful season. Wide right Jones R was the latest square peg in a round hole and Atkinson did little to enhance his reputation. Hanson won everything in the air against much smaller opposition and Reid and Wells both played reasonably well and looked quite threatening without busting a gut.
All in all a decent work out against a team that recently beat Town 1-0.
P.S. The new away kit is horrible.

The Guiseley diddy men played their part in a decent game and to be fair had us under pressure prior to our opening goal. With regards to the 'physicality', after seeing G Jones' first three challenges and Atkinson literally putting the boot into his opponent after losing the ball I can't understand how anyone can whinge about Boshell's challenge.

Jones certainly put it about a bit early doors and looked like he scared the sh1t out of their midfield - bodes well for the season!
If PP was that concerned why did he let Ravenhill play on til 78minute before bringing him off? Looked OK when he set up Wells 1st goal.
So think it is totally unfair to criticise Guiseley who played their part on trying to make it a real game. They certainly did not look dirty by any means.

Perhaps you can see the error of your comment?. Now that Ricky Ravenhill is injured for possibly 3 Months. Professional players should not have to be subjected to LATE BAD TACKLES, from non-professionals --In so termed 'Friendly' pre-Season Matches.
*
I have made and re-iterated my point of view. Perhaps changes to the rules on 'Friendly' pre-season games, is urgently needed to be applied by BOTH Clubs. The Match Officials need to be advised, and act more sternly to bad tackles, from ANY Player during a "FRIENDLY". What was Friendly about the injury to RR ?.

You've also got a very SHORT MEMORY not so long City were playing a SOUTHEND SUNDAY LEAGUE TEAM in pre-season because Peter Taylor wanted his players in bed before nine. Presume they all get BANTAM TEDDYBEARS on signing or are you preparing for another season of under achievement?

Playing these pre-season " Friendly ?" matches, nearly always cause an injury to a City player. I hope Ricky Ravenhill's injury, is not serious.
*
Nicky Boshell should not be proud of his LATE uncalled for tackle on RR. It was a FRIENDLY !!.- Thanks Guiseley!.
*
Play of that nature by lower division teams, is always a big worry for Professional Players, and their Managers. I know these matches are of a great concern --during Pre-Season preparations.Perhaps a re-appraisal of their BENEFIT ?-should be re-considered for next Season?.
*
My request to Simon Parker for an Attendance Total, for this Match, has gone unheaded, as usual.. Perhaps those Supporters who attended this match, could give me an assessment of the Crowd numbers- please. Thanks.
*
Pleased for the scorers, it helps to build confidence.
