Primary school children from the Ilkley area got together on Tuesday at Ilkley Swimming Pool for an inter-schools Jubilee Swimming Gala.
Seventy-eight children representing Addingham, All Saints, Ashlands, Ben Rhydding Burley & Woodhead, Ghyll Royd and Westville House took part.
The gala was organised by Ilkley Grammar School and Ilkley Swimming Club and was supported by Ilkley Parish Council.
The children competed in all four swimming strokes, medley and a relay.
The toughest and most exciting races were the individual 4 x 25m medley. Menston won the girls event and Ben Rhydding won the boys.
The trophy for the best boys team was won by Westville House, Ghyll Royd were second and Ben Rhydding third. Westville were also the best girls team with Menston second and Ben Rhydding third.
The trophy for the best swimming team, which combined the boys and girls results, went to Westville House. Ben Rhydding and Menston – who dominated the butterfly races – were joint second, Ashlands were fourth and All Saints fifth.
Ben Pollard, head coach at Ilkley Swimming club said he was impressed by the standard of swimming in Ilkley.
He also commented on how well behaved and disciplined they were.
The event was part of the Ilkley 2012 A Year to Remember activities. It was a great experience for the children, many of whom had never taken part in a gala before.
It was so successful that Peter Blackwell from Ilkley Grammar School said he hoped to make the gala an annual event.
