Students from Ilkley Karate Club proved once again they had the golden touch with an all time record of medals at the 2009 SKU Open Karate Championships held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.
The competition was made up of competitors representing clubs from Britain, as well as Europe.
The Ilkley club proved to be a force to be reckoned with this year in all the disciplines, kata, kumite and team kumite. The club came away with an amazing 26 medals these included ten gold, seven silver and nine bronze.
The results for Ilkley were the best to date from an International event and ranking a number one place overall in the medal tables for individual clubs.
Eleven-year-old Elly Field started the avalanche of awards as she won three golds, which included the team trophy.
A determined girls’ team of Elly, Georgia Breadley and Bridget Taylor made sure that the team title together with the gold medals stayed on British soil as they were up against strong international oposition. Abi Thackray made a promising debut in the girls’ junior kata event by taking a silver medal in a close final.
Adding to the titles were Georgia Breadley (11) and Bridget Taylor (10) who took gold and silver medals in their repective kata events making it an all Ilkley final.
However, the tables were turned in the open brown belt kata event as Bridget took gold and Georgia settled for a silver in a close final.
In the veterans’ black belt kata event instructor Mark Outterside showed he still had what it takes by winning another gold for his club. The Ilkley instructor, who still likes to compete, is still competing 29 years on since his first tournament back in Newcastle in 1981.
Jade Miller made a welcome return to the competition scene after a six year absence. Jade was entered in total of five events and came away with podium places.
These included two golds for kata (set moves), a silver medal and a bronze medal for the women’s free fighting events.
Outterside praised his students, especially the girls’ team, as they had a tough couple of bouts againts girls who were a lot taller.
He also felt the the recent workshops with nine times world champion and national coach Wayne Otto, OBE, had helped his students achieve their goals.
The Ilkley club is seeking the help of anyone who can contribute to club funds to aid further world titles next year. All sponsors are welcome.
