GUISELEY wrapped up their pre-season campaign with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Barnsley Under-23s at Nethermoor.

Scott Smith and Alex Purver had both gone close before Kayode Odejayi backheeled a loose ball to wrong foot Jake Greatorex.

There was applause from all sides of the ground for the striker, still fondly remembered by the League One side's fans for his winning goal in Barnsley's 1-0 win over Chelsea in their FA Cup quarter-final 10 years ago.

Tai-Reece Chisholm then showed great composure to bag a brace and put his side ahead during Tuesday's clash.

Parity was restored early in the second period, when a towering Harry Flowers header found the back of the net.

However, with the game seemingly petering out with the spoils shared, the visitors produced a length of the field move which ended with Chisholm playing the ball into the path of an unnamed trialist who finished with a crisp shot beyond Jon Worsnop.

Earlier, it was Guiseley who made the brighter start, and almost went ahead inside four minutes as Odejayi played in Alex Purver, who lashed his shot wildly over the bar.

Louis Walsh came close to opening the scoring moments later as he latched onto a through ball and rounded the onrushing Joe Green, but was unable to keep the ball in play.

Barnsley then had a good chance when Jordan Barnett’s corner fell at the feet of Will Smith, but the Reds’ skipper put his effort over from close range under pressure from the home defence.

It was an entertaining opening for the 350 fans, and they were treated to a fine reflex save from Greatorex as he brilliantly turned Kingsley James’ fierce drive over the bar.

After going behind, Guiseley almost equalised just two minutes after the interval, but Kaine Felix fired his effort over the bar.

But the Lions were soon rewarded as Flowers rose highest to head home from a corner just eight minutes into the second half to make it 2-2.

Guiseley laid siege on Barnsley's goal as Marcus Bignot and Russ O’Neill’s side pushed forward for that elusive third goal, but were thwarted and fell to a late winner.

With their packed pre-season programme now complete, Guiseley travel to Boston United on Saturday where the new season finally kicks off.
