A TOP-TEN finish was Otley AC's best result at the Washburn Valley relays, as Andy Pullen, Tom Midgley and Liam Dunne finished ninth overall for their Otley Hopefuls team.

Pullen ran the first leg in 20 minutes and two seconds before Midgley took the team up to eighth with his middle run of 23.31. Liam Dunne then guided his team home in 20.49. Their full time was one hour, four minutes and 22 seconds.

Tom Pomfrett and the Lake brothers (Andrew and Graham) formed Otleyesk and they were not far behind in 14th, with an overall time of 1.06.01.

Andy Webster ran the last leg for Didier's Darlings, who came 40th, and unfortunately there was no-one to make up a team for Jackie Ackroyd so she ran a solo on leg one.

Harrogate Harriers were the stars of the night though, as they broke both the Men's and Ladies records for the race.

Graham Lake took part in the Addingham Gala fell race on Saturday in scorching weather, coming home in a respectable 10th place with his time of 48.45.

The race is a very similar route to the Beamsley Beacon race earlier in the year, except competitors go up the summit ridge rather than down.

Lake struggled slightly in the heat, having to walk at times during the ascent despite the gradient not being particularly steep.

Although it was not perfect, he performed better on the descent and overtook a couple of people to achieve a solid result.

Fellow Otley AC runner Antonio Cardinale also took part and came 73nd in 1.32.

Howard Jeffrey turned up to compete in Sunday's Burton Leonard 10-kilometre race. The course is tough and full of varying terrain, ascents and descents.

After a solid start, he found a steady rhythm and passed those who had zoomed off too quick.

The first drinks station was at 5k and the temperature, at about 26 degrees, was beginning to take its toll.

Jeffrey maintained his pace and steadily moved through the field. The route steadily rises through 6k and there is a bit of shade available provided by the hedges and a few trees.

Towards 7k, runners follow another dusty, stony footpath between fields to an additional drinks station just before 8k.

Jeffrey finished strongly and strolled past a number of strong Harrogate runners before the line.

He was a couple of minutes down on last year’s time and was fourth in his age group. He finished 64th in 47.58, in a race which had 321 finishers.

Finally, Otley runner Tom Lynch took on the difficult challenge of completing the Wasdale fell race, a 34k run which includes an agonising ascent up Scafell Pike.

The intense heat hampered Lynch's efforts but he soldiered on to complete the course in 5.29.39, placing him 52nd out of 107 runners.
