ILKLEY orienteers Peter Haines and Tony Thornley mastered both the middle distance and classic races in the Lake District at the weekend, emerging on top in their respective classes - M60 and M70 - on both days to take the overall honours.
Saturday’s middle distance race was run in beautiful wooded terrain beside Lake Windermere while Sunday’s classic race was on rougher, mainly open fell on Lingmoor in Langdale, idyllic settings for two fine performances by the veterans.
Airienteers' local Baildon Moor event the previous weekend also scored some AIRE successes. Most notable was the King rivalry on the green course, where the Ilkley family all finished in the top ten.
Laura, now at Edinburgh University, won and she was closely followed by dad Rob in third and mum Lindsey in tenth.
Tom Crowther of Guiseley, who has recently celebrated his 80th birthday, had an excellent run to come fourth on short green.
The spring Wednesday evening races begin tonight at Danefield and they start from 6.30pm.
