ILKLEY Karate Club were in top form at the Wharfedale Karate Kata Championships.

Students from the club based at the Ben Rhydding Methodist Church picked up a haul of trophies at the event held at Aireborough Leisure Centre in Guiseley.

Clubs from Leeds, Otley, Guiseley, Skipton, Huddersfield, Manchester and Hull – including a representation from Wales – were all in action.

Ilkley, run by instructor Mark Outterside (6th dan) and his assistants, came away with an amazing 18 medals, four of which were gold.

Only 15 Ilkley students took part in the competition, with many competing for the first time – making those results all the more impressive.

Outterside singled out the performance of Vani Midgley, who won gold and silver in the individuals and a bronze in the team event with her two sons Arul and Rahul.
