HARRY Brook is relishing the chance to captain England’s Under-19s side in next month’s one-day series against India.

Yorkshire’s former Burley-in-Wharfedale batsman is currently playing in their Specsavers County Championship match against Somerset at Scarborough.

Prior to yesterday’s rain-affected second day, which saw Brook post 31 in tricky conditions, it was announced that he will lead his country in their five-match series between August 7-16.

He will also play in two four-dayers between July 23 and August 3.

Unfortunately, Brook will miss Yorkshire’s next Championship match, the Festival fixture against leaders Essex at Scarborough between August 6-9.

But the man himself is delighted to be included.

Speaking after Yorkshire closed day two on 159-7 in reply to Somerset’s 268, he said: "It's a good feeling.

“When David Graveney rang me and said I was going to be captain, I was very proud. To captain your country is a good feeling and something to look forward to.

"I've done a bit of captaincy for the Yorkshire Academy and in schools cricket, and I like the challenge.

”I'd like to do it more down the line.

“It's something else to concentrate on, and I feel it takes the pressure away from my batting. I don't mean this to sound bad, but it perhaps makes me want to win more.”

Brook is expecting their clashes with India to be competitive having faced them in India earlier this year.

"It was a good experience,” he reflected. “It was just a shame about the results.

“We lost 3-1 in the ODIs and drew the Test series. It would have been better to win, and I'd have liked a few more runs. But that's cricket.”

Eighteen-year-old Brook has made an encouraging start to life in Yorkshire’s Championship side with 38 and 31 in three innings.

Yesterday, he shared 50 for the fourth wicket with Yorkshire debutant Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who also made 31.

Brook was one of Craig Overton’s five wickets, caught at second slip trying to fend off a short ball having batted through a tricky spell at the start of play.

Only 44 overs were possible, with no play beyond 3pm. Adil Rashid reached 30 not out.

"We're not in the best position, but we can still win it,” added Brook.

Ryan Sidebottom is unlikely to bowl again in this match having picked up a back/side injury yesterday, but he should bat.
