GUISELEY goalkeeper Jonny Maxted picked up the supporters’ player of the season award following the club’s final game of the campaign.

That's despite the stopper not being involved in the dramatic result that secured the club’s National League status.

As the Lions earned a final day 1-1 draw thanks to a stoppage time goal from skipper Danny Lowe, regular number one Maxted was merely a spectator with Dan Atkinson between the sticks.

Following the game that saw Guiseley retain their place in the country’s fifth division in dramatic circumstances, Maxted said: “I watched from the side and wished I’d been involved in, but I had a little knock that ruled me out.

“When I first came here it was all up in the air, then Locky (manager Adam Lockwood) got the job and we’ve all had to dig in. That’s just what we did on the last day against Solihull Moors and we stayed up.”

The club’s supporters’ player of the season award is named after Craig Shearstone – a club stalwart who passed away, leaving a huge void behind him at Nethermoor.

Maxted added: “It’s a great honour to win it and I wasn’t expecting it.

“All of the lads put in a real shift but I’m grateful that most of the fans voted for me. I hope that we’ll learn from this season and hopefully next year will be a great one. I think we’ll do well.”
