JACK Wood produced an impressive run to take fourth place in the arduous Three Peaks race.

He completed the 23-mile course over Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough in two hours 56minutes 54 seconds.

The race, which has 5,279 metres of ascent, was won by Murray Strain, 34, from Hunters Bog Trotters in Edinburgh, in 2:49:38

Will Simmons also produced a fine run to take 33rd position in his first attempt at the race in 3:23:55.

Michael Lomas and Jane McCarthy both finished in under four hours with 3:57:09 and 3:57:47 respectively.

Iain Gibbons 4:10:46, Dave Robson 4:23:10, Robin Nicholson 4:28:40, Michael Duffield 4:32:20, Outi Kamarainen 4:34:15, Peter Shelly 4:41:23, Mike Baldwin – in his 22nd Three peaks race – 4:48:38, Adela Reperecki 5:05:39 and Martyn Stocker 5:09:17 were the other Harriers in the race..

Also running in the Yorkshire Dales was Steve Turland in the gruelling 62-mile Fellsman race which has11,000 ft of ascent.

He completed the testing course in a mere 16 hours.

Brian Melia was some distance away competing in another ultra distance race, the Madeira Island Ultra Trail (85 km/4700 m) ,where he finished 172nd position in 22hrs 11mins. He was second among the UK runners.

Mary Gibbons and Alison Weston ran the Coniston fell race which is the second event in the Lakes Grand Prix Series.

A superb route took the runners up Wetherlam, Swirl How and Coniston Old Man before finishing with a wicked direct descent back down to Coniston village.

Weston finished in 1hr 47mins to take the LV50 prize. Mary Gibbons, tackling the course for the first time, clocked 2:05.

Helen Waddington set a FV40 record in the Ilkley Skyline challenge of 4:23:19.

The route is 22 miles long with 850m of climbing and joins Beamsley Beacon, Round Hill and the summits along Burley Moor, Ilkley Moor and Rombalds Moor – starting and finishing at the Hermit in Burley-in-Wharfedale.

Three Harriers did the seven-mile Coiners' Fell Race from Mytholmroyd.

Jim Ryder came 11th in 53:41 and was second in the V50 category.

Kate Archer was the fifth lady after finishing 32nd in 59:46 and Jo Foster was second in the FV45 category and eight lady after coming 55th in 65:50.
