OLD Otliensians earned the local bragging rights when they defeated Otley Saracens 18-10 in the second round of the Latino Ceramics Aire-Wharfe Cup.

On a chilly night at Chaffers Field, Ensians were pegged back to 10-10 just before half-time, but scored all the points in the second half of what was at times a feisty contest that was riddled with penalties.

Alex Murphy's try and Connor Bateman's conversion and penalty had given the hosts a 10-3 lead but Otley's second string, who had managed a Ben Fairclough penalty, got a Marcus Triblett try that was converted by Danny Whitelaw to send the teams to their oranges all-square.

Bateman nudged Otliensians ahead with a second-half penalty, but then missed one before his try down the right wing put the home side more than a score in front.

Otley, who had two players sin-binned in the second half, including experienced prop Jason Moss, tried to come back into the derby but missed two late penalty attempts.

Ensians coach John Walker said: "Otley were a good young side but our familiarity told in the end, although we didn't play our best rugby as we were a bit eager and gave away penalties.

"However, our forwards manned up really well and we were very aggressive there.

"We knew that Otley's side had rather been thrown together as they put an advert on Leeds Beckett University's website on Tuesday afternoon appealing for players."

Ensians are the first side into the semi-finals, with the other three second-round ties being played last night.

Meanwhile, in the first round of the Latino Ceramics Aire-Wharfe Plate, Yarnbury Hornets won 44-19 at Bramley Phoenix.

Yarnbury's tries came from James Daffern (2), Luke Crowley (2), Jarrod Huss (2) and Josh Bateson, Huss adding two conversions and a penalty and Tom Woodley a conversion.
