Yorkshire Division Two: Old Grovians 29 Wath Upon Dearne 35

OLD Grovians gained two league points from this clash but felt that it could have been five if the referee had managed to get to the other side of the mauls.

Wath were first on the scoreboard with a penalty from near the halfway line after a high tackle, and almost capitalised on an interception try, with the attack ending deep in home territory with a visitor lknocking on.

Nevertheless, another penalty allowed Wath to double their lead but two minutes later they made the mistake of kicking the ball downfield.

Full back Anthony Griffin gathered it and ran the length of the pitch to put Matthew Worrall over but a couple of missed tackles gave Wath the chance to score a converted try and make it 13-5.

Strong carries and penetrating runs by Jack Hartley, Lewis Brook and Worrall threatened the Wath line, but the hosts had to settle for a Ben Brown penalty.

However, they took the lead when Griffin's long kick downfield was well chased by winger Tim Jones, whose quick line-out throw to Griffin resulted in Jones scoring a try, Brown converting to make it 15-13.

But the final minutes of the half belonged to Wath as they took advantage of missed tackles with two converted tries to lead 27-15 at the break.

Old Grovians had about 80 per cent of the possession in the second half. but they were denied two out of four groundings as the referee was on the wrong side of the action.

Wath managed a penalty and an unconverted try with their 20 per cent possession.

Brook got the home side's first try, with Brown's conversion pulling the margin back to 27-22 but Wath landed a penalty before Old Grovians' Danny Secker scored a try which Brown converted.

Trailing 30-29, Jones was the catalyst for ten minutes of home pressure in the Wath 22.

Grovians then spurned a penalty opportunity to go for a try but Hartley was held up, and then a try verdict went against Griffin.

Wath broke out to score their fourth try for a bonus point but, despite pushing for the converted try that would have won it for them, Grovians were pulled up for forward passes and had to be content with two points from a spirited contest.
