THE Brownlee brothers are in contention for a new global online award.

The triathlon stars from Bramhope are down to the last six in the Laureus Best Sporting Moment of the Year Award for 2016.

Their inclusion is down to the dramatic end to the Triathlon World Series race in Cozumel, Mexico on September 19 when, with 700 metres left, 26-year-old Jonny began to weave over the road in the hot and humid conditions.

Second-placed Alistair, 28, caught up with his brother, propping him up for the final 200 metres before pushing him over the line in second place.

Both were overtaken by South African Henri Schoeman and, while victory would have given Jonny the world title, second place meant that he was only four points behind eventual winner Mario Mola.

That was the most dramatic of the nominations.

The others, also chosen by the sporting legends of the Laureus World Sports Academy, are:

Fair Play (January 5): American tennis player Jack Sock advising opponent Lleyton Hewitt to challenge an umpire's decision in their Hopman Cup match in Perth, Australia.

Magical (July 5): The Icelandic football team returning to Reykjavik after reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 and taking part with thousands of fans in the so-called 'Icelandic thunder clap', which has been likened to a Viking war chant.

Heartwarming (July 10): Ten-year-old Portuguese boy Matisse embracing a sobbing Frenchman after France had lost the Euro 2016 final 1-0 to Portugal, saying: "It's only a game. Mr, don't worry. France has played a very good game. It's you who deserved the cup but our goalie Rui Patricio didn't allow it." The video went viral and melted a million hearts.

Sportsmanship (August 16): Nikki Hamblin and Abbey D'Agostino in the qualifying heats for the women's 5000 metres in the Rio Olympics. New Zealand's Hamblin tripped and fell, accidentally bringing down the United States' D'Agostino. The American got up but, instead of running away, helped Hamblin before faltering on a clearly injured knee. D'Agostino fell down again later, so Hamblin helped her up and the two ran together before embracing at the finish line. Both were awarded places in the final but A'gostino was unable to participate due to her injury.

Remarkable (August 31): Barcelona's under-12 team beat local side Omiya Ardija 1-0 in the final of the Junior Soccer World Challenge in Japan. While the Spaniards were celebrating, they noticed how distraught their opponents were, so rushed to hug their rivals.

The award will be voted for by sports fans from around the world (one vote per person), and those who take part have the chance to win three pairs of VIP tickets (flights and accommodation included) to attend the Awards Ceremony in Monaco on Tuesday, February 14.

The voting period lasts from January 16 until February 4.
